On the afternoon of September 20, 1926, a large and deadly tornado moved through Encarnación, located in the country of Paraguay. The tornado, known as the Encarnación tornado or Encarnación cyclone of 1926, heavily damaged the town, killing up to five hundred people. The tornado would eventually receive a rating of F5 on the Fujita scale; it remains the deadliest tornado in South American history.
