Despite Spain taking the lead in the 11th minute, they would lose 2–1 to France, thanks to goals from both Raymond Kopa and Jean Vincent. Following this match, Kopa would gain the nickname "the Napoleon of football", and became a transfer target for Real Madrid, who signed him in 1956.
