In their tenth year under head coach Woody Hayes, the Buckeyes compiled a 7–2 record, finished in third place in the Big Ten, and outscored opponents by a total of 209 to 90. Against ranked opponents, the Buckeyes defeated No. 4 Illinois, No. 11 Wisconsin, and No. 10 Michigan State, but lost to No. 5 Iowa. They were ranked No. 9 in the final AP poll.
