In their twelfth year under head coach John Cooper, the Buckeyes compiled a 6–6 record, tied for eighth place in the Big Ten, and were outscored by a total of 287 to 284. Against ranked opponents, the Buckeyes lost to No. 12 Miami, No. 2 Penn State, and No. 10 Michigan, and defeated No. 14 UCLA, No. 17 Purdue, and No. 24 Minnesota. The Buckeyes did not play in a bowl game and were unranked in the final AP and Coaches polls.
