The Aggies were led by eighth–year head coach Doug Martin and played their home games at the Sun Bowl in El Paso, Texas due to COVID-19 restrictions imposed by the state of New Mexico. On August 13, 2020, New Mexico State suspended all sports competitions due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The Aggies played an abbreviated two-game season in February and March 2021, compiling a record of 1–1.
