The elections were called after incumbent president Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedow announced his intention to resign, having already announced on 25 January 2020, that he would not seek re-election to a fourth term, leaving the office open for the first time since 2007, when Berdimuhamedow was first elected, following the death of president-for-life Saparmurat Niyazov on 21 December 2006.
