Before the United States even declared its independence, there were efforts to have parts of what is now Canada join the Thirteen Colonies in their complaints against Great Britain. American forces unsuccessfully attempted to invade Canada during the Invasion of Quebec of 1775 and War of 1812. One last American diplomatic effort to annex Canada was made in the aftermath of the American Civil War and confederation of Canada, but the 1871 Treaty of Washington did not include any such provisions.
