Developed by Jayavarman VII, Banteay Chhmar is a unique example of Angkorian urbanism, dissimilar to other 'open cities' of the period.171 As a result, Banteay Chhmar has helped archaeologists to better understand Angkor, in particular, the rule of Jayavarman VII.
