A member of the Conservative Party, he represented the riding of Ajax—Pickering in the House of Commons of Canada from 2011 to 2015 and served as the minister of citizenship and immigration from 2013 to 2015. Alexander was the Canadian ambassador to Afghanistan from 2003 to 2005.
