Microplastics effects on human health

Wikipedia Overview

The effects of microplastics on human health are an increasing concern and an actively increasing area of research. Microplastics are defined as plastic fragments smaller than 5 millimeters (mm), and even smaller particles such as nanoplastics, particles smaller than 1000 nanometers (nm). The presence of microplastics in our environment has raised concerns about the long-term impacts on human health. Human exposure to micro and nanoplastics occurs mainly through inhalation, ingestion, along with dermal contact. The particles have been detected in drinking water, food, air, and human tissues. Nanoplastics remain less studied than larger plastic debris, including their long-term health impacts which are still being investigated. These particles originate from the degradation of larger plastics and are now found in various environmental matrices, including water, soil, and air. Given their minute size, nanoplastics can penetrate biological barriers and accumulate in human tissues, potentially leading to adverse health effects.
