Hayes, a Republican, took office after his narrow electoral college victory in the 1876 presidential election. This contentious election resulted in the Compromise of 1877, where Hayes agreed to pull federal troops out of the Southern United States, thus ending the Reconstruction era. Hayes declined to seek re-election and was succeeded by James A. Garfield.
