Slavery in Haiti began at an unknown time with slavery being practiced by the native populations when the Spanish first arrived on the island in 1492. The Spanish engaged in forced labor of the native population until that community was decimated by disease. To replace the diminished native labor, enslaved Africans began being imported in earnest during the 16th century. By the early 17th century the Saint-Domingue was a slave society with the majority of the population enslaved.
